Tip edge brace
A Tip Edge Brace is useful with patients who do not want to wear headgear or a removable appliance like a Twin Block. As much less patient co-operation is required to achieve a great result.
This is a fixed appliance that helps make space for mild crowding without the need for wearing a head brace – or can be used to help reduce the hours that a head brace needs to be worn. Patients get use to this appliance in about 3 days
Fixed Twin Block
This is a fixed version of the growth modifying twin block and ensures the patient actually wears the appliance as the success of the twin block is completely related to hours of wear – the more the better!!. Patients get use to this appliance in about 2 weeks.
Removable Twin Bock
This appliance helps bring back teeth which are sticking out by maximising the genetic growth of the lower jaw restraining the growth of the top jaw, tipping the upper teeth back and pushing the lower teeth forwards. To work properly the appliance needs to be worn 24 hours a day for 6 to 9 months
Damon self-ligating braces are popular because they are advertised as taking less time and causing less discomfort than other braces.
But, is that really true?
After several randomized and controlled trials investigating Damon braces, The American Association of Orthodontics have reached the conclusion that there is a lack of evidence that supports the claim that Damon braces reduce treatment time, result in fewer extractions, and cause less discomfort.
Recently the UK advertising standards agency concluded that the Damon Braces advertising was misleading. They concluded that the evidence provided by the company was not sufficient to back up the claims that the braces can move teeth faster and are less painful.
Dr. Kevin O’Brien, Professor of Orthodontics at the School of Dentistry at the University of Manchester, recently wrote on his blog. 'The UK’s landmark claim that Damon is misleading patients and violates professional ethical standards and should be warning to all professionals to be sure any claims we make are backed up by true, scientific and peer-reviewed evidence'
I would advise patients to be cautious of any claims, that your teeth will move faster that isn’t backed up by proper evidence, there is no magic tool that can speed up orthodontic treatment.
